  1. @neil What’s happening in the Labour party is a formula which has played out at least three times within my lifetime. In the 1980s Kinnock drove out the Militant left wing faction in the hope of becoming electable (it didn’t work). In the 1990s John Smith and then Tony Blair removed “old Labour” and the “clause 4” commitment to public ownership, and agreed to stick to Conservative party spending plans. And now Starmer is doing something similar with the Corbyn faction, in the hope of repeating the conditions prior to 1997.In each case they had to make the party more dictatorial, removing democratic procedures which tended to favour pro-worker policies.
